Pentecost Sunday marks the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the early followers of Jesus, celebrated fifty days after Easter. It is recognized as the birth of the Church, when tongues of fire and a rushing wind empowered the disciples to speak boldly and to proclaim the gospel in many languages. Pentecost emphasizes the Spirit’s gifts—unity, courage, and the ongoing presence of God among believers—and invites communities to renew their commitment to mission, service, and the work of reconciliation. Churches often observe the day with prayer, Scripture readings from Acts 2, and the color red to symbolize the flame of the Spirit.
